Openings with no building around them

Most access control assumes a building: a door, a wall, a power supply, somebody inside. A parks department has almost none of that. It has restrooms at the far end of a field, a gate at a trailhead, a concession stand open twelve days a year, a pump house behind the pool, an irrigation controller in a box, a boat ramp gate, a campground shower block, a shed full of mowers and a cemetery gate.

They are outdoors, they are unstaffed, they are scattered across miles, and the people who need in are seasonal staff, volunteers, sports leagues, event hire groups and contractors. So they run on padlocks, and the padlock key gets copied, lent, kept and eventually lost.

The lock has nothing to power. A CyberLock cylinder needs no wiring and no battery at the opening. Power comes from the battery inside the CyberKey the moment the key touches the lock. A gate in the middle of a field is exactly the case the product was built for.

Seasonal staff, leagues and event hire

Access is issued against a schedule rather than handed over. A summer seasonal gets a key that stops working in September. A softball league gets the field house and the restrooms on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between March and July. A wedding hire gets the pavilion for one Saturday. A contractor gets the pool plant until the job closes out.

Nothing has to be collected at the end of a season, which matters, because collecting keys from seasonal staff and volunteers is the part that never actually happens. An unreturned key expires by itself.

If a key is lost you disable it in CyberAudit Web and it stops opening locks. Locks also hold a lost key list, up to 500 entries on Generation 2 non-padlock models, so a named key can be refused at the cylinder itself. No gate is rekeyed and no other key is affected.

Vandalism, theft and what the record gives you

Every cylinder records the lock ID, the date, the time and whether access was granted. A standard cylinder stores 1,100 events in Generation 1 mode and 6,500 in Generation 2, and the CyberKey keeps its own separate trail of up to 3,900 events, or 12,000 on a Generation 2 key. It always records a refusal, so an attempt on a shed or a gate somebody was not cleared for is captured even though it never opened.

When a mower goes missing, or a restroom is left unlocked overnight, or a field is used by a group that never booked it, the record is the difference between a suspicion and an answer. It also tells you whether a closing round actually happened.

There is no perfect security system, and CyberLock does not claim to be one. What it removes is the copied key and the unaccountable opening, which is where most parks losses actually start.

What a rollout looks like

1. We survey the openings. Gate padlocks, restroom cylinders, shutter locks and cabinet cam locks each take a different format. With over 450 cylinder designs the goal is to match the hardware already out in the parks.
2. We fit a pilot. Usually one park or one sports complex, with real keys and real seasonal staff. Most cylinder swaps take as little as 30 seconds; awkward formats run 10 to 15 minutes. Nothing is drilled and nothing is wired.
3. You read the audit trail. You see which gates and buildings were opened, by whom and when, before committing to anything. The end of a season is usually the easiest window.

Common questions about parks and public space access control

Can we secure a gate that is nowhere near power?

Yes, and it is the main reason parks departments look at CyberLock. There is no wiring and no battery at the lock. Power comes from the battery inside the CyberKey when the key touches the cylinder. A trailhead gate, a boat ramp or a remote restroom gets full access control and an audit trail with nothing to plug in and no trenching.

Will it survive being outdoors year round?

CyberLock makes weather resistant padlocks and cylinder formats intended for exterior doors, gates, cages and containers. Over 450 designs cover interior and exterior openings, so the format is matched to where the asset actually sits rather than forcing one lock everywhere.

What happens to keys at the end of the season?

Nothing has to be collected. Keys are issued against a schedule with an end date, so a seasonal key stops working on its own. You can also disable one immediately in CyberAudit Web, and locks hold a lost key list so a named key can be refused at the cylinder itself.

Can a sports league get access without holding a permanent key?

Yes. A league gets a key scoped to the field house and restrooms, on their booked evenings only, for the length of the season, with every opening recorded. The same works for event hire, where a group gets one building for one day.

Does it tell us whether staff actually locked up?

It tells you what was opened and when, by whom, which in practice answers most closing round questions. Bear in mind it records openings rather than the state of the door, so it shows the visit rather than proving the latch was thrown.

Can we require two people to open the pool chemical store?

Yes, on standard cylinders. The lock can require two or more keys presented in succession, and can require those keys to belong to different schedules, so one person carrying two keys will not satisfy it. An open delay can hold it shut for up to 17 minutes after first contact.

How many openings can one key cover?

Up to 3,300 locks on a standard key, or up to 12,000 lock list entries on a Generation 2 key with the Lock List Expansion module, across up to 49 separate schedules. A parks crew normally carries one key covering every park in the system.

Does it record attempted entry?

The CyberKey always records a no access event in its own audit trail, so an attempt at a shed or gate somebody was not cleared for is captured even though the lock never opened. Locks do not record denied attempts by default, though that can be configured.
