A CyberKey is a programmable electronic key that carries a person’s access permissions inside the key itself. It looks roughly like a normal key. It behaves nothing like one.
When it touches a lock, three things happen in about a second. The key powers the lock. The lock and key verify each other. Access is granted or denied, and either way the attempt is recorded with the time, the location and the identity of the person holding it.
That last part is what most people are actually looking for when they start researching this.
The problem it exists to solve
Mechanical keys have four failure modes and every facility manager has met all of them.
They get copied. A brass key can be duplicated at a hardware store for a few dollars by anyone holding it, and you will never know it happened.
They do not report anything. A door either opened or it did not. There is no record of who, when, or how many times.
Losing one is expensive. A single lost master key means rekeying every cylinder it opened, plus reissuing keys to everyone. On a campus or a portfolio that is a project, not an errand.
Departures leave holes. Someone leaves the organization and does not return their key. You either rekey or you accept the risk, and most organizations quietly accept the risk.
A CyberKey removes all four, and it does it without running wire to a single door.
How it actually works
The key carries the permissions, not the lock. Each user gets one CyberKey programmed with what they are allowed to open, and when. The locks themselves hold no user list and need no configuration in the field.
The key powers the lock. This is the part that surprises people. The CyberKey contains its own battery and transfers power to the cylinder on contact. The lock needs no wiring, no power supply and no network drop. That is why this works on gates, remote cabinets, mechanical rooms, storage buildings and everywhere else running conduit is impractical or impossible.
Communication is encrypted. AES-256 between key and lock, so the exchange cannot be captured and replayed.
Access can be time bound. Permissions can be limited to specific days and hours. A contractor who should only be on site Tuesday morning has a key that only works Tuesday morning.
One key scales. A single CyberKey can open up to 3,300 locks, or 12,000 with expansion. Most organizations never approach that ceiling, but it means the system does not run out of room as it grows.
The audit trail is the real product
Every interaction is logged, and this is worth stating precisely: denied attempts are logged too.
That distinction matters more than it sounds. A record of successful entries tells you who did their job. A record of denied attempts tells you who tried to go somewhere they were not supposed to be, which is the thing you actually want to know about.
Each event carries the timestamp, the lock, and the person. Administrators pull reports from the management software rather than reconstructing events from memory and sign-in sheets.
What happens when a key goes missing
Nothing much, which is the point.
You deactivate it in software. The key stops working. No cylinder is touched, no other key is reissued, and no locksmith is scheduled.
Compare that to a lost mechanical master, where the honest options are an expensive rekey or a quiet decision to live with an unknown. Removing that decision from the table is most of the value of the system.
Where this fits
CyberKey is the credential side of a CyberLock system. The electronic cylinders replace your existing mechanical cylinders in the hardware you already have, so in most cases you are changing the cylinder and the key rather than replacing doors, frames or panic hardware.
It tends to earn its keep fastest in a few specific situations:
- Sites with no power at the door. Gates, remote structures, outbuildings, utility cabinets.
- High turnover. Anywhere the roster changes often enough that rekeying is a recurring line item.
- Distributed footprints. Many locations, one key, one report.
- Anywhere accountability is the requirement, not just security. Regulated storage, evidence rooms, controlled inventory.
The short version
A CyberKey replaces a brass key with a programmable one that cannot be copied, can be switched off from a desk, works on locks with no wiring, and writes down every time it is used and every time it is refused.
